As you browse our Fabric of Life collections, take in all the combinations of colors, patterns and appliqués. Look closely and you might see the young women of the Hèrè jè Center smiling as they unveil the kaleidoscopic tie-dyed and wax-stamped prints they create from lengths of cloud-white cotton. Listen, and you might hear their voices over the hum of sewing machines, collaborating with one another on fabric selections for bags and scarves, or the soft, steady rattle of beads rolling in bowls of the jewelry makers. Close your eyes and imagine the proud apprentices depositing their profits into their savings accounts—and realizing their dreams for a better life.
Whether you choose a richly dyed African print scarf or a dazzling spilled beads necklace, a book bag or a selection of fat quarters, your purchases directly help impoverished African women create their own success stories.
