Depending on the type of line used, backing capacity can be well over 300 yards. This reel will balance spey rods in the 15'-18' range.

This model is being produced on a limited production basis specifically because of repeated requests from Norwegian fly fishers, or for international anglers bound for Norway, for an extra-large fly reel for their trophy Atlantic salmon waters.

This model is a mega jump from other sizes. The reasons are several. On some rivers because of their size, depth, and strength of flow, extremely heavy flies and long sink tips with sink rates of #6 are needed.

In Scandinavia these flies may take the form of copper tubes that have the size and weight of a big game cartridge shell. In southern Finland, the Baltic Sea Atlantic salmon can be quite large, and the rivers extremely deep and swift. The Finns on these waters cast 16-18' rods, and tossing 45-foot long Deep Water Express heads weighing up to 1000 grains with large copper tube flies. Only with the large rods could the line and flies be rolled out and cast.

There is also the matter of fly line capacity. Anglers using 5 meter double taper or long belly spey lines need this size reel if they are to carry sufficient backing to beach that once-in-a-lifetime Atlantic salmon.

Besides Norwegian waters, there are the huge rivers in Finland and Sweden's Lapland where no long cast is long enough. But the reel is not limited to this area. We receive orders for this reel from both Canadian and U.S. fly fishers. Chinook salmon fishermen on the Skeena and in Alaska's Kenai Peninsula and winter steelhead fly fishers on lower rivers in both British Columbia and the U.S. are examples of big water needs this reel will satisfy.
