The drag is a simple preset gear & pawl overrunning check mechanism. The Mark IV trout models are made for the purist trout fly fishermen, who requires a classic design and appropriately functioning drag system for light tippets with adequate backing for playing a fish on the reel.

This reel balances best on 7 ½ - 8ft bamboo rods in the 5-6 weight line class and 8-8 ½ ft graphite rods for 3-4 weight lines with plenty of backing.
